Back Story: “I would really love to know the real story of Mary Black. I have heard stories from people who have visited her gravesite but although I lived very near the grave site, I never visited the actual grave. I can tell you that I have researched the history of Taylor Township, Lawrence County, PA and found that she really did live there. Her last will and testament is accessible on the internet. Once you read it you do get the impression that she was a hateful woman. I seem to remember that her children were written out of her will but a grandson was included. Therefore, she didn’t die a premature death. Anyone may find the same information on the internet as I did. The point is, she really did exist.
You may remember the murder of a woman and her child in New Castle, PA in the late 70’s or early 80’s committed by devil worshipers. They were caught and it was revealed in the New Castle News that they went to Mary Black’s grave after committing the murders and threw the knife into the Sportsman’s Lake near her grave.”

Ritual: “I don’t get involved in such things. Last thing I would want would be to evoke an evil spirit.”

Thanks: Thanks To ‘DVD’ from West Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for submitting this thing.

Back Story: “Mary Black was a witch that was able to be beckoned from the dead, and her grave was located near Turkey Hill. I am not sure how she died it was an old story told in the area. My relatives live on Turkey Hill.”

Ritual: You go in a room with a mirror in it, light a candle, turn off the lights, and say her name 100 times.

Result: When you turn the lights on, your face is supposed to be scratched and bloody.

Other Submitted Information: “We attempted to go to her grave and there were dead animals hanging in the trees. We got scared and turned around. I grew up with my neighbors older sister having a piece of her grave stone in her bedroom, and was always curious of the truth in it.”

Personal Note: Now, this person says that they are from ‘Wampum PA’. That fact alone proves my point that there are far too many versions of this thing. I grew up in a little area of New Castle PA called, ‘Mahoningtown’, That makes Big H and I practically related. I’ve never heard this submitted version of the story.  See what I mean?

Thanks: Thanks To ‘Big H’ from Wampum, Pennsylvania for submitting this legend. (I LOVE hearing from people back home!)

Back Story: “Mary Black was born in 1800 in Ireland, I havent yet done the research to know when she came to this country, she died in 1888.  Probably being from the backwoods of Ireland it IS very likely that she practiced the Old Religion, or what we call Witchcraft.   She was supposedly the High Priestess or leader of the area coven.  From what Ive read about her, a child or other relative of hers married into the Tindall family, this is why she is buried in the Tindall cemetery.  Her gravestone was stolen from the cemetery and eventually ended up in the local Vo-Tech school parking lot.  The Lawrence County Historical Society now has the tombstone in their safe custody.  Her remains were dug up and moved because of the popularity of her legend and the ensuing vandalism.  The last time I visited the site, ALL of the graves were dug up, by who or why I have no idea!”

Other Submitted Information: “I do know that on one occasion when attempting to visit the site, the car broke down twice but we eventually made it there. Out of the 6 or 7 of us that went only two didnt chicken out, myself and a young kid named Willy.  Within months of that visit Willy committed suicide at age 15.  On another visit we pulled over to the path which leads back to the graves, while exiting the vehicle we looked up and in the moonlight we could plainly see a group of black hooded figures facing us at the top of the first hill on the path, needless to say we hightailed it out of there!  Also strange lights can be seen back there at night.  This cemetery is right in the middle of a woods next to a swamp!  Very STRANGE place!”

Thanks: Thanks To ‘Mike James’ from Wampum, Pennsylvania for submitting this legend.

City: New Castle (Shenango Township)

Back Story: “The Tindall family cemetery [near the “Turkey Hill” section of Shenango township, New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania] is most famously known as the resting place of Mary Black, a supposed, but never proven witch of around the same time period [around A.D. 1796]. Her grave can be located after following the path from the road until you arrive at the swamp, go around the swamp on the left side. Her grave is separate from the others and is the only one dug up.”

This is also basically what I grew up hearing; I have read, however, that Mary Black’s grave (which may have been and/or may continue to be unmarked by a headstone) was RELOCATED from the Turkey Hill cemetary because it was a subject of much vandalism.  Mary Black was allegedly a witch, although I’m not sure if this means she was a Satan-worshiper, a Nature Goddess-worshiper, or if she was just something like an herbalist. Her children probably entered into the legend somehow (Did they die? Did she kill them? Were they killed by others or otherwise taken away from her?), which I suspect from the naming of the children in the ritual’s invokation.  In retrospect, I think it’s sad that this poor woman is immortalized as such a horrible ghost legend, when in reality, she was probably as kind as anyone else, and probably misunderstood — which may have led to her death (the cause of which, I cannot remember).

Ritual: I’ve heard variations.
1. Look into a mirror in a dark room at night, preferably at/after midnight, on Halloween for bonus points.
2. Say “Mary Black” or make vague threats (“I have your children”, “I’ve killed your children”, etc.) a certain number of times, either one, three, seven, thirteen, or one hundred times.  Feel free to turn around counter-clockwise — once, thrice, seven or thirteen times — while/between the invoking.
3. Go to sleep, as normal

Result: While you are asleep, Mary Black allegedly climbs out of the mirror and scratches your face severely or claws your eyes out.  (In another version, she strangles you, cutting through your neck with her claw-like fingernails.)

Other Submitted Information: “I tried it myself in a few different variations (including midnight on Halloween, counter-clockwise three times while saying “I killed your children” thirteen times).  I have been in the vicinity of the Turkey Hill cemetery while hunting, but I have not searched for her grave.  My neighbor claimed that a FOAF (friend of a friend) had his/her face scratched pretty badly, but this neighbor made up a lot of stories.  In other news, in both the house I grew up in and my grandmother’s house (next door to each other), my younger sister, my younger brother (an untrustworthy, inveterate liar), and the current unrelated tenants have reported seeing ghosts of my father and maternal grandfather.”

Personal Note: Dude, this is what I grew up with..sorta. I mean I’ve heard the stories of Turkey Hill and everything, but I never knew the whole story. Good research! Now do Zombieland! :p

Thanks: Thanks To ‘Theron’ from New Castle, Pennsylvania for submitting this legend. (Great job!)

Back Story: The Legend I heard was that Mary was a young girl who had a child while she was in high school. In this time that was forbidden unless you were married. The town shunned her and even her parents kicked her out. She tried to Explain who the father was but no one would listen, no matter how much she tried explaining. The man she was blaming became scared even though no one believed her. He found Mary and tried to kill the baby but mary got in the was and he stabbed her. The legend goes that she was alive after being stabbed long enough to see the man kill the baby and leave. Now she searches for the man that killed her and her baby.

Ritual: There are two rituals.
1. One is you light 3 white candles to represent the holy trinity. You turn out all lights and chant “Bloody Mary dont be mad, we want to hear your story, so sad.”

2. The next ritual is that you light three black candles and three red candles to represent to unholy ones. Turn out the lights and chant “Bloody Mary I killed your baby”

Result: There are two results.

1. The first part is that mary will appear and smile at you and you are supposed to be able to ask her a question.

2. The second ritual is that you are able to see Mary and she look angry and reaches out with the knife that killed her and she tries to stab you but can’t because she is not of this world. But if you stand there long enough a pain starts to develop and scratches appear. Top make her leave in either ritual turn the lights on.

Experience: “I did this one time but I did the nice ritual and when she appeared I was so freaked out I couldn’t ask anything. I flipped on the lights and haven’t had the guts to try the second ritual.”

Thanks: Thanks To ‘Legend Finder’ from Meigs County, Ohio for submitting this legend. (Another one with a lot of great info!)
