Catching the Ghost Hunters

~ Written By Dave Chellis ~

It is a time of great reflection. The U.S.S. Economy is listing to port, and national healthcare is teetering on the brink of being somehow more annoyingly prevalent on a daily basis. And as we prepare for winter (notice I skipped autumn – I’m still holding out that the heat has kicked it to the curb), finally something worthy of paying attention to has squirmed its way back into our Wednesday nights. Our two favorite plumbers have once again scoured the landscape of greenery and pipeage and shown us a reflection into the counterintuitive world of the paranormal. And there’s no princess to save this time friends. Kris is a full fledge ghost hunter, whatever that means.

Let me start by saying I’ve been a fan since day one. I love these guys and what they do. Whether you agree with all the hype and fanfare surrounding them, something about the team makes you want to hang with them. They’ve become the cool kids we all wanted to be without really even trying. And we’ve grown up with them. There were the early days…. remember “Dude run?”. The TAPS trailer? The twin demonologists? Watching those episodes now, it’s amazing how far they’ve come. I feel like I’ve been a part of their growth both as a maturing team and as a group of friends. And while I don’t agree with everything they do, the respect is there. They’ve given light to a profession stuck in a dark corner.

So why does it matter anyway? Skeptics will never cave without seeing a full apparition walk up and high five someone. And that’s okay. I’m not worried about those people. You know why? Because everyone knows apparitions don’t like high fives. When you’re dead and gone, it’s lost its meaning entirely. This is a good point in my rhetorical rambling to introduce one of my favorite quotes:

“For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don’t believe, no proof is possible.” – Stuart Chase

Admittedly it’s a hard pill to swallow. To think that somehow human ingenuity has crossed with Para dimensional boundaries is an unbelievably difficult evolution to understand. Did our caveman hands really construct a K2 meter? How is it that we’ve been trying for 50 some odd years to contact potential alien life forms, yet science will routinely discount the possibility of communicating with spirits? Is it so far fetched to assume that our ancestors might actually have something to say to us? I mean really… if aliens do exists, they have far more to learn from our attempts at communication than we of their “awesome technology.” If we’re talking EMF fields and temperature fluctuations, then we’re talking science. And if we’re talking science, then we’re talking theories. And if we’re talking theories, than I theorize that maybe, just maybe, we’ve exhausted all the tax payer money I’m willing to part with in search of E.T.’s secret lair.

So where do we draw the line for reality or realism? Is it all ratings and hype? Do Grant and Jason really want to make a difference in the field? Yes, and they deserve our support. No matter the method of their delivery, we are akin to the notion that what they want is what we want. We all want to believe in something. And whether you believed in Santa or not, somehow all those goods were there in the morning weren’t they?

I whole heartedly wish the Ghost Hunters a successful autumn season. They are the truth seekers, the purveyors of our creed. And while their feet will never stick solid in scientific factuality, they are the eyes and ears of an ever growing army of believers. Kudos, and thanks for all the memories.

Nostradamus: 2012 (Another DVD Giveaway)

Aug12

~By Bill Stone~

Is it the end of violence, or a violent end?

Nostradamus: 2012That’s the question asked by the History Channel’s special called ‘Nostradamus: 2012’. When the prospect of reviewing this thing for A&E Home Video came to me, I had to ask myself, “What the hell does Nostradamus have to do with the Year 2012?” After all, it wasn’t Nostradamus, but the Myans that predicted that something big was going to go down that year. Lemme rephrase that… The Myans predicted NOTHING would go down in 2012. Their calendar ends on December 21, 2012. MANY people believe that that day marks the end of time.

In case you didn’t know, although the Myans didn’t have the technology to make telescopes or anything, they were experts at using the stars for timekeeping. Hundreds of years before our so-called civilized societies, they’ve not only predicted EVERY SINGLE lunar AND solar eclipse, but they’ve used the stars to calculate the exact length of a year up to a thousandth of a decimal point. They had the galactic equinox, and the center of The Milky Way all mapped out for us WAY before we even got here.

That’s just astronomy. Astrology is something altogether different. It seems that they knew all about that stuff as well, and they were DISTURBINGLY accurate. They predicted when their own civilization would end. Some say that they predicted both world wars. They predicted the astronomical phenomenon called “Galactic Alignment” where The Sun will align perfectly with the center of The Milky Way Galaxy. It happens only once every 26 THOUSAND years. Apparently it’s going to go down on December 21, 2012. The FINAL day of their calendar.

Some say that that date will mark the end to all violence in the world, we will finally have peace, and it will be a new beginning for all of us. Others say it will be our doom.

I’m going to lay out the whole science aspect for you real quick since it wasn’t covered in the DVD, and because I really dig this stuff.

The science of the whole thing is sound. It’s all about the destructive gravitational influence of the black hole at the center of The Milky Way. Because of the black hole, the galaxy is flat and round. It sits on what is called the ‘Galactic Plane’, ‘Gravitational Disc’ or ‘Galactic Equator’. It’s believed to be Galactic Alignmentpaper thin, and the closer the Earth gets to it, the more unstable our environment will become. Volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other natural disasters will be more frequent, and more severe. The effects MAY have already begun. Let’s not forget the “Galactic Plane’s” effect on other objects in space. Some orbits will be changed. Smaller celestial objects will be sent off in who knows what direction like missiles guaranteed to destroy anything that gets in their way. When the Galactic Alignment happens, the earth will cross the densest part of the ‘Galactic Plane’. IF all the current data is correct, it will take the Earth a few years to cross it, and the gravitational forces that the earth is subjected to during that short time period will create Hell on Earth.

That whole science part wasn’t in the DVD, and it ain’t no prediction. It’s physics.

So the question is, why didn’t the Myans go any farther in time beyond the Galactic Alignment? Apparently they knew what they were doing, prediction wise, so maybe the end of their calendar IS cause for alarm.

Tryin’ to think… I don’t feel like looking it up. What happened 26,000 years ago, the LAST time this happened? And the time before that?

About Nostradamus…

The thing with Nostradamus, he predicted EVERYTHING! It’s unfortunate that nobody knows what he predicted until AFTER it actually happens. When it happens, all the scholars say “You know… He predicted this”.

World War 1? He predicted it.

The Antichrists? Oh yeah.

World war 2? Yup

JFK assassination? He not only predicted it, but some say he predicted that Oswald was actually innocent.

9-11? Everyone said he knew about that too.

Tsunami? Sure!

EVERYTHING… but unfortunately, they were all predicted after the fact by interpreters and translators.

This is the problem with Nostradamus. He lived in an era of religious persecution where predicting the future could get him killed by the church. Because of this, he wrote everything as riddles in the form of four line poems called “Quatrains”. Now, 500 years after he died, we’re still trying to figure out and decipher his bullshit. It isn’t until after a disaster happens where someone says, “hey, if you read this quatrain he wrote, you can see how he predicted this thing.” They twist his quatrain to make it mean what THEY want it to mean.

NostradamusThat’s why he’s connected with the 2012 thing. It’s big in the news because that day is approaching quickly. Even Roland Emmerich is making a movie about it guaranteed to fill seats, and drop IQ points. Might as well throw Nostradamus into the mix and see if it sticks.

I’m not saying he’s a fake. There are some quatrains that are uncannily accurate. I’m just saying that people try too hard to connect that which has no connection, and they do it WAY TOO LATE.

Did Nostradamus predict the Alignment of 2012? I suppose it’s possible, but even after I watched the DVD, I really have no idea. Just like all of the other people who claim he predicted things, this video attempts to make it convincing, and interesting.

Can’t say whether it succeeds on the convincing part, but it was definitely interesting. I enjoyed it.

I have to say this though…

If we’re still here, and the world hasn’t ended, or at least started to end by December 22, 2012, I don’t want to hear another end of the world prediction EVER again. I’m tired of getting my hopes up.

————————————————————————–

A&E Home Video was kind enough to send me 2 copies of this DVD, one for me to watch and review, and the other to give to YOU!If you want me to send it to you, please leave a comment giving me your thoughts on this whole 2012/Nostradamus thingy! You may also email me at BeyonderBill@Yahoo.com!

Take Me to the Other Side: Moral Responsibilities of Ghost Hunters as Related to Spirits and the Afterlife

Aug07
by pattyhap1863 on August 7, 2009 at 7:20 pm

~ Written By Bobby Elgee ~

This article is an open query to all ghost hunters, paranormal investigators, psychics, mediums, parapsychologists, and theologians regarding the possible moral obligations concerning assisting certain types of ghosts–as defined as the consciousness of deceased persons possibly trapped in the material realm–to move on to ‘the other side.’

I am an amateur paranormal investigator with limited experience and many questions cross my mind, not only about the research and gathering ‘evidence’ of the paranormal, but also questions related to the moral, ethical, and spiritual aspects of this endeavor.

My question is this:

Do we have an obligation to assist ghosts in their transition to ‘the other side’?

The question is based on a series of assumptions as follows:

1. Ghosts are the consciousness of deceased humans and certain ghosts are ‘stuck’ in the material realm.

2. Some ghosts may be unaware that they are ghosts and/or they are unable to muster the actions/steps necessary to ‘move on.’

3. There is something beyond the material realm. A place or state exists that is a natural and probably desirable next step, and getting there is necessary to complete the spiritual evolution of these free-floating ‘minds’ called ghosts.

4. Thus we, as the living, being knowledgeable of the condition of their existence–and theoretically having the tools to assist them in their spiritual evolution–should render this assistance.

The above assumptions possibly place us–as paranormal investigators and others concerned with the spiritual evolution of our species–in a unique position to be able to provide this assistance. If the assumptions above are true and/or you believe in ghosts, to not act based on these assumptions be could something akin to leaving Kitty Genovese bleeding on the street.

If you believe that people should be altruistic–that is being obligated and willing to help our fellow humans (and ghosts)–we should seriously consider this issue.

There is research that shows that humans can be altruistic. They certainly may demonstrate this trait. We operate in groups for the greater good and are social creatures. However, there is also social psychological research that demonstrates that we are very selfish, e.g. we may only clearly operate altruistically when it serves our own needs/ideals or that of our family. We may be unique in the animal kingdom considering our combination of altruistic and selfish traits. The discussion of these psychological and sociological ideas certainly goes beyond the constrains of this article, but they do bear mentioning.

So, when considering this question, one has to look deep into oneself and society and consider whether your answer to the question is self-serving or genuinely altruistic.

Considering the popular television show Ghost Hunters, rarely do they televise cleansing efforts, involve religious authorities or psychics specific to this issue, and it appears that their activities in regards to their clients mostly involve educating their clients to paranormal phenomena with the tenet that knowledge reduces fear–and that there is really nothing to fear, at least for the humans involved.

This is just on the surface, and TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) certainly provides more services than is discernable from their television show and has demonstrated the capability to provide referrals to professionals and experts capable of operating under the assumptions I mentioned earlier.

Anyone that has done any background research on Grant, Jason, and Steve–the force behind TAPS– realizes that their paranormal experiences far exceeds what is able to be shown in an hour television show. For all the commercialization and debates to as to whether the ‘evidence’ they present is valid, they do deserve immense credit to bringing the realm of the paranormal–and implications on the spiritual evolution of the human race–to light and educating the general public in regards to these type of phenomena as genuine and legitimate human experiences.

Other television shows have a bent that lends themselves more toward addressing the possible moral and ethical responsibilities that this article is questioning. Paranormal State, the team of young investigators and paranormal entrepreneurs from Penn State, definitely deserves credit for bringing this issue more to light and embracing a wider spirituality that underlies the entire endeavor.

Both groups, Ghost Hunters and Paranormal State, are clearly human-centric. The living are more important then the dead. Their needs take precedent, being the primary needs in any case. This is a premise I have to believe, as my belief in ghosts and the afterlife are unresolved at best. If a child is scared, or an adult is being tormented by paranormal experiences, the impact on their quality of life is obvious. Why the supposed ‘ghosts’ are exhibiting this ‘behavior’ is always secondary to the needs of the living.

Are we racist against ghosts? Do we neglect their needs in support of the living? Absolutely, but this is the way it is. There is a conscious and unconscious assigning of priorities in any paranormal investigation, and whether we are ‘racists’ considering ghosts is fodder for another article, the implications of which are not discussed here.

I take this type of bias as possible indication of genuine altruism exhibited by the human race. It is one of the ways that demonstrates that we, as living humans, are part of the same family. Ghosts, by definition, are not, though perhaps they once were. Thus ghosts become the second-class citizens of any paranormal investigation. Though ghosts are the reason we’re investigating in the first place, in reality they are not. We are investigating for us, and sometimes ghosts are treated like nothing more then strange animals in a zoo where we go to gawk. Again, these issues are very interesting, but beyond the bounds of this article.

So, we come back to the original question:

Do we have an obligation to help ghosts move to the other side?

Consider the following series of questions which represent a potential can of worms related to the question above.

1. What if some ghosts choose to stay?

There are documented cases of people who are alive, astrally traveling or presumably engaging in ESP and appearing as apparitions to people, family members, or even complete strangers. How do you determine the difference between this phenomenon and that of a haunting?

Then we would need to determine the difference between a residual haunting and an intelligent haunting, assuming that residual haunting is not caused by a conscious spirit.

What’s left may be an intelligent haunting. If so, how would we decide if the ghost wants to be here, or that it doesn’t know it is trapped? What if the ghost knows it’s trapped, and believes that the other side is hell? Again, we have a can of worms here which may place us–as paranormal investigators–casting judgments that have already been decided by the concepts of God across a variety of religions.

2. How do we determine the reasons why an intelligent ghost is staying? How do we decide those reasons presumably using the tools we have now?

3. Once we’ve determined the answers to #1 and #2, what do we do next? How do we decide which ghosts to help, and those that don’t need or want our help? What tactics do we employ to accomplish this?

So, we are left with a series of questions that are very important, addressing the basic premise of what it is to be human–and to be a ghost–and our obligations and responsibilities as to what that means. Ranging from theology, spirituality, psychology, to the tactics of ghost hunting, this “hobby” certainly generates questions–and possibly answers–that may affect the entire human race.

I have no answers, only questions. However, in my quest to become a more competent paranormal investigator, I believe the techniques and technology are the relatively easy questions to address. The questions behind why we are employing such tactics–the difficult part in my opinion–and our eventual goals become very important for all ghost hunters to consider.

I firmly believe that we cannot flail blindly in the dark when dealing with such questions. I think, whether we believe in ghosts or not, we do have an obligation to help them if they need it. Not to do so makes you less human in my opinion. And, I feel that many groups neglect these questions or when they are addressed, it is done so in a cursory and self-serving way. I certainly do not exempt myself from this, and perhaps writing this makes me a hypocrite.

In my opinion, there are many obstacles in the way of developing any type of consensus in these matters. One of the main obstacles is inconsistent use of language and even a basic ignorance, and perhaps disagreement, in regards to various terminologies.

For example, many groups state that their goal is to find proof of the paranormal. This is a misnomer. The fact is that a paranormal phenomenon does exist. I define paranormal as something that is currently unexplainable by science. There is plenty of phenomena that is unexplainable by science, as every scientist will tell you.

One needs to clearly define the words they are using if they pretend they are doing something remotely resembling scientific research. If everyone uses the same word in a different way, no one has any idea what anyone is talking about. In scientific research, one doesn’t generally have to worry about this. In the field of paranormal investigation, I feel this problem is pervasive.

Some groups clearly state that their goal is to prove the existence of the afterlife or life after death. These groups come more closely to presenting themselves in a way that elucidates their goals. But what exactly are their goals?

Lets be frank, no one is probably ever going to prove the existence of the afterlife in the foreseeable future. A lofty goal, sure, but one in all likelihood is probably unobtainable. Setting realistic goals is important in any endeavor, and ghost hunting is no different. Perhaps setting such an all encompassing goal undermines the method, and the ability to work toward obtaining this goal.

Running around, taking strange photographs, capturing audio of unexplained voices, and documenting cold spots and spikes in EMF activity may not be advancing the body of knowledge toward proving the afterlife in any meaningful way. However, at this point, these are some the most popular tools we have.

If you do want to prove the existence of the afterlife, and you capture some evidence of what you feel is a ghost, how come most people just walk away from it? They put the picture on their Web site and show it off, with little regard to the ghost itself. Even worse then that, they may return to the location–even bringing in more investigators–in an attempt to capture further ‘evidence.’ And yet, what is done as far as attempts to determine why the ‘ghost’ is there and what can be done to help its spiritual evolution? Again, this unfortunate spirit is reduced to an exhibit, a zoo animal, and something to be harassed.

There has to be more then that, and as a ghost hunter or paranormal investigator, especially if you believe in ghosts, you should do something about it, and hopefully something that will help on a spiritual level. Otherwise, in my opinion, you are nothing better then a tourist and an amateur, and are solely thinking of your own needs and desires. In other words, you are being self-serving.

Many groups are very committed to debunking. In my mind, these groups have less of an obligation to assist these disembodied spirits. For myself, I am not convinced of the existence of ghosts. The paranormal phenomena I have captured evidence of is simply that in my mind. It’s paranormal–unexplained by science. Subsequently calling such phenomena a ghost is a leap of faith I can’t make with any degree of certainty at this time. Thus, I’m fairly comfortable not attaching any spiritual implications or obligations to any such phenomena.

Until I am actually convinced that there are such things as ghosts, I don’t necessarily feel any obligation to take further steps beyond just trying to figure out what “it” is. However, I do articulate this, and don’t run around identifying such phenomena as ghosts, then do nothing about it. Also, I do work with people who study these aspects of paranormal investigations, and feel that they have the skills to address these aspects if necessary.

Of course, I may be wrong and self-serving and–in an effort to justify my actions and reconcile them with my thoughts and opinions on the subject–may be neglecting a very important piece of the puzzle. In fact, I have a nagging feeling in the back of my head this may be the very case.

Given the original premise of this article, ghost hunters become elevated to a unique group– a group who has to have an understanding of human psychology, culture, and spirituality, and be able to offer advice and take action concerning a spirits spiritual well-being.

The field of paranormal investigation will evolved only if people consider the basic questions, motivations, and drives beyond just capturing evidence. Look at the original question underneath it all…why do we do this?

To take a basic tenet of ethics, one must first do no harm. Regardless of whether ghosts exist–and by default this implies the existence of an afterlife–I sincerely don’t believe that most paranormal investigators are causing any harm. But if one does consider the spiritual implications regarding helping a trapped spirit, we are acting on a body of imperfect knowledge, and thus by doing so, perhaps could cause harm if we aren’t very careful and thoughtful in our methods.

So, are there any answers in this article? Probably not, but there are many questions and the half-baked musings of an amateur ghost hunter who may just be in over his head.

Talking with Ghosts – My Journey with EVP

Jul31
by pattyhap1863 on July 31, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Posted In: Author-X, E.V.P., Editorials

~ Written By Leslie Rose ~

I have always been interested in the paranormal since I was a child. I grew up in a haunted house in central NJ where all the members of my family and some family friends had personal experiences. As a child, I was terrified to be alone in that house. Someone was very evidently trying to communicate with us.

December 6th 2004 was the day my true journey into communicating with the paranormal began, and it began innocuously with a trip to Google. I was bored at work and googled “ghost” and found a paranormal website I became a member of. That led, in time, to me being able to exchange experiences with others who were just like me in that they also seemed to draw the spirits to them. May 2007 I found a website that was focused on EVP and I thought: “you know, I bet I can do that, that would be really cool!” So off I drove to Best Buy to buy my very first recorder. I felt like I was buying contraband items or something; it felt like everyone knew why I was buying it and what I intended to do with it. I started by going to a little cemetery here near me and straight off the bat I got my very first EVP. At first the EVP I got were so faint it was frustrating. I heard the voices, which came as faint whispers, but others I knew who were getting very clear voices were telling me “you have nothing” and “that is just the wind”. It was horrible.

I heard “c’mon and take them” when I told the spirits I was intending to come into the cemetery and take pics. To me, that was exciting. To the people online, it was a faint sound of the wind.

There are three categories of EVP: A, B and C, as explained on the website Ghost to Ghost:
“Developed by Sarah Estep, the A, B, and C filing system is the easy, universal method for analysis. It is the standard within the EVP community.
“Class A EVP | Very audible and can be clearly understood without the use of computer software intervention. I like to have our EVP files confirmed by 2 or more individuals before classifying them as an A. This helps to ensure their authenticity as well as their quality. Class A EVP are very rare, and although I have captured the majority of them on analog recorders, a Class A EVP is unmistakable. You should be able to clearly understand the vocalization / sound straight from the recording device itself without the use of headphones.
“Class B EVP | Class B recordings are somewhat similar to a Class A but are not clearly heard by all. They are usually mixed messages or jumbled words that the researcher cannot clearly make out. They are not necessarily at a lower capture volume and can be as audible as or even more so than a Class A. They seem to be the second most common EVP captures.
“Class C EVP | Class C captures are, by far the most common. These files are mostly inaudible or can be low whispers and usually require software intervention. Many researchers simply toss these aside, or even delete them entirely which I like to call “Spirit Prejudice”.
My earliest EVP were all class C. It took about 6 months of dedicated practice and opening myself to this whole concept for the EVP to slip from a category C to a B. Sometimes I am lucky enough to capture a class A EVP, but those are extremely rare.

I practiced by going from place to place, recording. I recorded in my car and got EVP. I set it in my bedroom and got really WEIRD EVP that led to spirits understanding they could come by and talk to me without the recorder!!. I posted my EVP online just to hear again and again from people who had more experience at this than I, that I had nothing. I left the websites. I figured if they were all such experts they could have it all to themselves.

But I didn’t give up.

In October 2008 I bought a second recorder because I wanted the flexibility of having two; one I could lay down somewhere on an investigation, one I could carry in my hand. The voices became increasingly clearer. Nowadays I take both on my investigations and will hand one to a friend, urging them to try it. Depending on who it is, the EVP they capture are very clear. I do feel somehow though, that there is a difference in the two recorders; it is as if they are attuned to me especially, and the older, grey one gets clearer EVP than the blue one does. I do not know why this is. I have talked with several people online who have their own theories. I personally think it has to do with the molecular structure of the recorder itself; once the spirits can “attune” themselves to a gadget, they can communicate effectively through it.

In December 2008 I initiated my own webpage and posted some of my early EVP to it. They still were very faint (so-called “class C”). Some of my friends got curious about what I was doing and so I emailed them my EVP. My best friend, especially, who is an absolute skeptic and who will debunk anything he possibly can, told me to keep going. He noticed the quality of my work was getting better and better. Anyone I investigate with I will share my EVP with, I only ask if they use it somewhere that they mention that I am the owner.

Listening to recordings to hunt out the EVP captured within is tedious work. Anyone I have talked to who does EVP work insists on using earphones. I don’t, personally. I listen to my recordings using my computer speakers after I upload the recordings directly into the PC via a fire wire. The reason I don’t use earphones is because I do a lot of my recordings while I am walking around during the daytime and the traffic sounds and airplane sounds (which are inevitable) can be so loud that it hurts my ears if I use the earphones. The EVP can be very faint and I have to turn up the volume. If I have a very, very faint one, I will put the earphones on just to verify I have something, but this is after I have cut out JUST that section.

Cataloging your EVP is very important. I tend to save all my original .wav recordings in full length in folders designated with date and place. Then I copy the EVP out of those and save them to their separate files along with the originals, noting recording number, hour, minute, second and what I understand was said in the file name. Backups are vital. You do not want to lose years worth of work in a computer crash! The program I use is Audacity, a free web program that is fairly easy to use.

One side effect of opening myself so much to this whole process has been the capability of clairaudience that I have developed. I distinctly recall the first time it happened. I was on my third daytime jaunt into a cemetery to take pics and record, and as I was walking between the graves in the modern section I heard a woman say “Hello?” very clearly out of thin air about ten feet to the right of me. No one was there that I could see. The next few times it was a bit more personal; I would be lying in bed and be awakened by a man’s voice speaking directly in my ear. This was a man whose voice I managed to capture several times in my bedroom, leading to a Best Practice: Do NOT do EVP recording in your personal space unless you chase everyone out that you have invited into it after you are done. I asked my online friends what to do since this had gotten very annoying and quite scary too. They suggested a smudging, which worked, and nowadays I use the bathroom or living room if I feel the need to record at home. And if I DO notice paranormal activity in my bedroom, I chase the spirit out.

Just last week I was in a cemetery in eastern Massachusetts at night with a friend and both she and I heard a woman saying “yoo hoooo!” to us as we walked by the section we always feel the most activity occurs. This was also captured on my digital recorder. These voices are also getting much clearer.

Nowadays most EVP I capture are class B. Yes, it’s a strange hobby for most, but it’s fun and you never know what you will get. I have my personal ghosts who like to come talk to me again and again. I have captured creepy whispery EVP, laughing, children talking to me, warnings to leave a place, and spirits questioning who I am. I have also gotten direct answers to questions I have asked. I can only stress that this is a fascinating method for communicating with spirits and is fun and rewarding!

Space Mountain in the Dark

~ Written By Dave Chellis ~

It was 12:30 in the morning and I sat dormant in the corner of a dark room, staring into the black void in front of me.  The occasional passing over of a team member’s light occasionally lit the three feet in front of me, reminding me that I wasn’t totally alone.  My years of curiosity had led me to such a complicated place, such a lifeless room full of movement.  My head racing, I went back a year prior to thinking this was a good idea.  What were we doing here, what dare did we lose to be here?  As I sat somewhere in the middle of sanity and complete craziness, I found myself wondering what defense I could muster should something happen.  Let’s see, I said to myself, I have my trusty MagLite, my IR Thermometer, and my wits.  The IR Camera was over in the corner, which might as well have been another continent away.  I suppose I could simply punch thin air, hoping for a Tyson-like knockout blow to whatever was there.  Then, it began.  Cold wafts of air were moving between myself and two other team members.  The measurements on the IR Thermometer were off the charts.  25-30 degree temperature drops on each of us, lingering on us long enough to challenge the bounds of our sanity.  As we sat, adjusting our jackets, trying to the best of our abilities to keep warm, random lights would flash around the room, with no apparent source or direction.  One minute it would flash in front of my face, another in front of the door.  This continued for 30 minutes or so as we sat trying to speak with our new friend.  Then, as if we had suddenly become more boring than the nothing which was there before, it left us.

I’ve been many places, seen many strange sights, but never experienced anything like that.  I’ve captured souls in discord, unaware of my presence.  I’ve had voices in despair ask for my help.  I’ve seen shadows move with no light to guide them.  But I don’t think I’ve ever been so helpless, so lost, so intrigued.  That house was the first place I’ve been that I consider to be haunted.  Many places I’ve been have paranormal activity, but this was different.  I felt like we were meant to be there.  Like we had some purpose to be there.  Of course our findings weren’t totally based on that event, there were many factors.  But what struck me is how we sat in awe.  I don’t remember saying much, or thinking much.  It was amazing in the most translucent way.  Like we were moving away years of neglect and avoidance of the truth.  We were giving this soul a chance to impress us.

The event passed by and like I said was one of several that night, but this stuck with me the most.  So much time has passed since then, but I still feel like we were tangling with something well beyond our scope of understanding.  It wasn’t that we didn’t want to know why we were privy to this show, or that we didn’t care.  The only thing that mattered was that it was out of our control.  As weird as that sounds, it’s good to be out of control sometimes.  This applies in life as well.  We’re all so used to being in control.  Being able to see what we hear, to touch what we see, to push away things that we feel might harm us.  But it’s in this alternate reality that we find ourselves quite often in the paranormal field.  And it’s what makes this all worthwhile.  Until you open your mind to the things you don’t understand, you’ll never understand what’s in your mind.

We’ve not returned to that house, and I doubt we will.  Why you ask?  Because we’ll never completely understand what happened, and that’s just fine with me.  Don’t understand what I mean hmm?  Ever wonder what Space Mountain looks like when it’s not sheltered by darkness?  Yeah, I did too.  The internet is a bad thing sometimes.
