Choose a career as a Ghost Hunter!

~ Written By Bobby Elgee ~

Over my five years as a paranormal investigator, I have attempted to answer many questions dealing with paranormal activity and the field in general. I consider myself no expert by any means.

Since some of these questions deal with areas in which I feel I have some competence such as cognitive psychology, mental illness, and brain disorders, I feel that I have been able to adequately address them. If I don’t feel that I have the background necessary to answer a question, I will refer the individual to people who can.

There is a question that has been repeatedly asked which I initially found surprising. I would say, the majority –but not all–of the people that have asked me this question have been teenagers.

The question is always some variation of…

“I’ve decided that I want to be a ghost hunter, you know for a job. I’ve very certain about this, do you know how I do this?”

Even with my relatively limited knowledge, I was willing to tackle this question. Am I saying the right thing to these folks?

Now, I can only assume that the recent popularity of such shows as Ghost Hunters, Most Haunted, Paranormal State, and others has lead to the belief, at least in the people asking questions, that being a paranormal investigator is a legitimate career path. We know that they have sparked an explosion of popularity in the field.

So, I tell them with no uncertainty that Ghost Hunting is NOT a career choice.

I think that the popularity of this field hits the base of human existence…consider the question. Is there an afterlife? Of course, by definition, everyone is interested. But, lets take a step back and consider the draw as a career. You get to travel, you get to go into cool places, it appears to be a relatively easy activity that is accessible to everyone, and you may get to be on television! There are some basic human needs being met here, and being thought of as cool because your job is a desire that very few of us don’t want. Who doesn’t want the recognition and to be looked up to by their peers?

So, we understand some of the motivations. Prestige, recognition, possible fame, working to finding the answer of one of the most important questions of life and death. But…

Realize that some of the most respected people in the field have been doing this for years and years, and, most of them don’t have their own television show, and I know some of them aren’t interested in having one. People labor for years to gain a level of expertise in a subject matter. Sudden stars like Jason and Grant have been conducting paranormal investigations for years, yet, their careers are as plumbers.

The people whom I consider the most respected and “famous” paranormal investigators are individuals like Troy Taylor, Jon Zaffis, and Lloyd Auerbach. I am not conversant on the educational and career backgrounds of these individuals, but I do believe that they are able to make somewhat of a living working in the paranormal field. None of them have a famous TV show, but all are accomplished authors, lecturers, and teachers willing to share their knowledge. Mr. Taylor –with the well-known, mid-western sensibility to tell it like it is–specifically says that he eschews celebrity, having chosen not to go that way long ago.

In my eyes, these are the giants without which shows like Ghost Hunters would not exist.

Now we come to money. How does one earn money being a paranormal investigator? Good investigators don’t charge for investigations. Beware of individuals that do. So, where does that leave us?

People that are making money off this field are authors, those who run tour groups and give conferences, and, perhaps earn money from web site advertising or perhaps paranormal marketing for businesses. The most rare are the very small percentage of people who have a television show. At least as far as I can tell.

I should note that I have been contacted by three different television producers over the last 4 years (via e-mail ) looking for people to audition for new paranormal-based television shows. Pretty cool, but I’m not an accomplished or well-known investigator, so I would hazard that I was one of thousands of people that they contacted. Sure, they may have liked my web site, and seen my picture, but these opportunities are very rare.

Visit the International Ghost Hunters Society (Dave and Sharon Oester) www.ghostweb.com or Mass Paranormal (www.massparanormal.com) if you want to examples of people I certainly respect that are probably able to finance their time spent doing paranormal investigations via their activities. There are many ways to earn money, but you don’t do it being an investigator, you generally have to do it by one of the ways I’ve mentioned in the previous paragraph.

So, where does that leave you for a career as a ghost hunter? And we finally come to the answer to the original question…

I advise people that ghost hunting is a hobby. If you can find a way to earn enough revenue to finance your hobby through donations, you are a successful ghost hunter. If you can build a popular paranormal web site and earn money through advertising and selling products on line, you are a successful ghost hunter. But, you’d better pick something else for a career.

If you are very, very serious about the pursuit of the paranormal, there is an actual career path for you as a psychologist. You can obtain your doctorate in parapsychology and teach at a university. Still, it’s not a career as a ghost hunter. You’ll more than likely make enough money to finance your investigations, but it won’t be your main job, just a hobby, like it is for me. Of course, you’ll be extremely qualified to actually conduct an investigation.

So, for all of you career track ghost hunters out there, good luck.

Does anyone have any other ideas? I’d sure like to make enough money ghost hunting to pay my mortgage.

Conscious Spirits: Intelligent Hauntings and Anthropomorphism

Apr23

Posted In: Author-Bobby Elgee, Paranormal Investigation, Theoretical

~ Written By Bobby Elgee ~

Many paranormal groups will detail the difference between two types of hauntings–residual and intelligent. Without going into a great degree of detail, residual hauntings are like a tape recorder that periodically plays for a variety of supposed reasons, while intelligent hauntings imply some degree of consciousness and interaction with the environment, including the people that encounter them.
The goal of this article is not to go into a myriad of details regarding the specifics of these two types of hauntings, or necessarily, how to tell the difference. Instead, I’d like to discuss people’s propensity to attribute human characteristics to things that aren’t human.
The following definition is taken from Merriam Websters 11th Collegiate Dictionary, probably the most widely used dictionary, especially in the publishing industry:
anthropomorphize
Main Entry:
an·thro·po·mor·phize
Pronunciation:
-?f?z
Function:
verb
Inflected Form(s):
an·thro·po·mor·phized; an·thro·po·mor·phiz·ing
Date:
1845
transitive verb
: to attribute human form or personality to
intransitive verb
: to attribute human form or personality to things not human
— an·thro·po·mor·phi·za·tion -?m?r-f?-?z?-sh?n noun

If you are a human being, you have a natural tendency to do this. It’s part of being human, much like recognizing faces in ambiguous visual stimuli; a wonderful ability afforded us by the most spectacular of all organs–our brains. The question is, how does one do this accurately in the realm of paranormal investigation?

It’s natural for humans to be self-centered or egocentric. If something happened, its probably related to you, and perhaps is because of something you did. Ask a child of a certain age “Why does the sun come up?” and they will answer with some variation of “Because I got up.” It is simply a developmental stage that–hopefully–we all outgrow.

But, to me, it seems that we may revert to earlier developmental stages when analyzing paranormal phenomena. Consider the following hypothetical questions and answers….

Why did that mist show up in a picture?
It was a ghost trying to show itself to me.

Why did those plates fall off the counter?
A ghost was trying to get my attention.

Why are the dowsing rods moving?
A spirit is spinning them around in answer to your questions.

Why did my EMF detector spike when there’s no electrical source around?
A spirit is attempting to make contact with us.

Why did this cold spot materialize?
A ghost is trying to manifest, and tell me it’s here.

Why did that door slam?
The spirits are upset that we’re here.

What is the cat looking at?
A ghost, animals can see things that we can’t. It must be a member of PETA.

The questions could certainly apply to many paranormal investigations I’ve been on. The answers however, show a clear indication of anthropormorphism–in addition to a lack of a debunking attempt. Their is no indication from the events that this is an intelligent haunting, and yet the person answering the question automatically makes it a conscious spirit interacting with the investigator. In addition, they are clearly ascribing human attributes to something non-human, in this case, a bunch of environmental observations.

Whether such things are paranormal–not explainable by science–may be determined in the context of a careful investigation. Whether they were caused by a spirit or ghost can certainly never be proven, regardless of whether it is a residual or intelligent haunting.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that we all need to fight against our basic human propensity to anthropomorphize. I feel it can sabotage an investigation, causing investigators to lose focus and pigeon-hole data into their belief system, and, perhaps, even cause people to miss potentially relevant events.

So, unless a full-bodied apparition materializes in front of you in period dress, tells you it’s a ghost, and then offers to play a game of cards with you, be very careful about calling anything an intelligent haunting. The events that occurred are probably not paranormal to begin with. To make them into a ghost interacting with you is quite a stretch.

Have I been in haunted places where I felt that a presence was interacting with the team? Absolutely! Have I recorded EVPs that respond to an investigators questions in a specific manner? Yes, albeit rarely.

Assigning attributes such as sex and personality traits–as well as motivations–to paranormal phenomena is a slippery slope. I prefer to leave that stuff up to competent psychics–which are very, very rare.

Monster Quest Season 2 DVD Giveaway

Feb11
by BeyonderBill on February 11, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Posted In: Author-BeyonderBill, Cryptozoology, Editorials, The Beyond

Monster Quest Season 2A&E home video emailed me about writing a review for The Second Season of The History Channel program called Monster Quest. They also sent me an extra copy of the DVD to give away. Just like the other show, I’m going to give it to you! If you want a free copy of the Second Season DVD, keep readin’.

“Witnesses around the world report seeing monsters. Are they real or imaginary? Science searches for answers…on Monster Quest.”

A Personal Note

I was never a big cryptozoology buff. I mean, growing up, I heard about Bigfoot, and the Loch Ness Monster. I watched Harry And the Hendersons a buttload of times, and liked it. But… These ‘monsters’ are all on the other side of the country, or world. How was I ever going to get to get interested in, or become knowledgeable about something that I could never have any exposure to aside from watching the few documentaries that showed up on TV every now and then?

As a matter of fact, this show is somewhat of a remake. If you were alive, and into this stuff in the late 70’s or early 80’s, you may remember a show called “In Search Of” which was hosted by Leonard Nimoy. For those of you who don’t know who that is, it’s Mr. Spock from Star Trek. Anyway, it had pretty much the exact same premise as Monster Quest. I remember liking the show, but I was too young to REALLY ‘get it’.

Because of that, the study of cryptids themselves really never did anything for me. I mean, I liked these things cause they were unknowns…you know, the same as ghosts and UFO’s, but I just couldn’t do anything with them. I watched everything I could, of course.

In early 2005, when I started thinking about making a paranormal based website, I thought about Monsters are EVERYWHERE!putting up a Cryptozoology Section for you monster fans out there. I decided that it was a bad idea. After all, at the time, I didn’t know much about the subject. Since then, I’ve made it a point to educate myself on it, and the inspiration to do so actually PARTLY came from watching Monster Quest. So, needless to say, unlike many of the paranormal or unknown based TV shows, I AM a fan of this one.

The First Episode

Since 2004 The Sci-Fi Channel had Wednesday nights all but won when it came to capturing our imaginations with paranormal programming. As the years moved on, and as interest in the Sci-Fi’s flagship show began to increase, The History Channel decided to go after its own piece of the pie.

Monster Quest, airing at 9PM Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday nights is a documentary series that’s become a staple in the History Channels lineup since its premiere in October of 2007 combating The Sci-Fi Channels juggernaut, ‘Ghost Hunters’. To be honest, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

For me, actually it was perfect timing. Ghost Hunters was getting stale, and annoying with certain things that I won’t go into here. So, I changed the channel.

The first episode delved deeply into Lake Champlain, in search of the mysterious lake serpent known as “Champ”.
The show itself was pretty much a standard documentary like we’ve seen for years on the History Channel, Discovery, or an old school National Geographic special. THAT is what I think I enjoyed most about the whole thing, and ALL the episodes for that matter.

See, lately in television, and everywhere else, everyones looking for the latest greatest thing. In television, that means that they’re going for an edgy format, some drama where it isn’t needed, or whatever other gimmick that they can think of to sell their show. Unfortunately, in this process, MOST networks and producers forget what has been time tested, and what has worked for years. Monster Quest did not make this mistake.

Champ   When searching for Champ, they interviewed eyewitnesses who gladly told their stories about their encounters with the creature. Some even claimed to have taken pictures, and had the images available for analysis. Then, they took the photos to analysis experts. Some, cried hoax, others said that they were real. The picture to te left is one of the most famous pictures of Champ. An analyst on the show explained HOW it could be, and WHY he believed it to be only a log floating in the water.

They had a team of divers out there swimming around. They had a boat playin’ around out there with some sonar. The sonar people actually DID capture some anomalies on their equipment that could not be explained.

The Second Season

The second seson of the show was more of the same. That’s a good thing, but it seems that they added some things that I just didn’t feel fit into the idea of the show.

First of all, there was an episode on ‘Ghosts’. It’s no secret that that I’m very interested in this topic. Unfortunately, having an episode about it on THIS particular show seemed completely redundant, and out of place. We have a thousand ghost related shows. Ghost Hunters in particular SHARES Monster Quest’s time slot on the same night. Ghosts aren’t cryptids. They also did a show on Vampires, which I found a little bit too far out there.

Regardless, these minor complaints don’t effect my overall opinion of Monster Quest. I liked that they:) did an episode on the Chupacabra. I like that monster. It is a funny word.

What Monster Quest is, is a simple scientific investigation. The show does not rely on spooky camera angles. It does not use spooky music to creep its viewers out before the commercial break. It leaves no stone unturned in an attempt to gain information about the monster it is searching for. Some may call this boring. I call it a welcomed change of pace.

In the end, every episode does the exact same thing I try to do with every page on this website. The show simply gives the viewer the information that it has, or whatever it can find. It lays it all out for us. It has no agenda, other than to make us think. Are these creatures real? Here’s the evidence we have both FOR, and AGAINST the idea.

We’re not going to tell you what to believe. Make up your own mind.

I LOVE THAT! I wish there was more open-mindedness like this on the tube.

Complaining or criticizing, I can go on forever. I wish I had more to talk about on this page. I really do, but I have nothing to complain about here.

   Good show.

Primal Fear Review (DVD Contest)

Feb05

Posted In: Author-BeyonderBill, Editorials

~Written By Bill Stone~

A little bit ago, A&E home video emailed me about writing a review for The History Channel program called Primal Fear. They also sent me an extra copy of the DVD to give away. I’m going to give it to you! Keep readin’.

Going into this, I had never even heard of Primal Fear. The first thing that I had decided to do was go to The History Channel’s website, and get some information about the show.

This is what their website said.

“Take a look, if you dare, into what drives our deepest fears. Explore the fears of being buried alive, drowning, being burned alive and more. Examine the roots of each fear, how the fear has changed over time, and how the fear has been manipulated to create mass hysteria. Discover the science of how the body reacts to fear and the physiological cause of death. Listen to the stories of those who have survived a near-death experience. Doctors, historians, psychologists and scientists will give viewers perspective on our most primal fears.”

If you want to read that again on THEIR site, or get a little more information, Click Here.

I thought that what I had read was interesting, and that it would be right up my alley.

Well, let’s see.

First off, I have no idea why they wanted ME, of all people to watch, and review this program. Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad for the opportunity, and I LOVE doing this sort of thing, but I run a paranormal website about ghosts, paranormal investigation, divination, and a little cryptozoology mixed in.

There was almost NOTHING in this show that fit into that criteria.

For that, I was disappointed.

The show featured a list of fears that we ALL feel. In this review, I’m going to go through each them one by one, and tell you a little bit about what the program discussed regarding that particular fear.

It also talked about the part of our brain called the amygdala, and how it controls our reaction to each fear. It went into some detail about instinctive reactions, and unconscious effects that each primal fear has on us. That scientific stuff, for me was the most interesting aspect of the program. I’m not going to give away what was said about all that. Instead, I recommend you watch the program to see for yourself.

If you’re not interested in reading my reviews on each fear, scroll down to the next blue colored text like this, to get a quick overview, and to find out how you can get a free copy of Primal Fear on DVD.

For now, I’m just going to give you a rundown of each fear, and my opinion of the information they used.

Eaten Alive
In the beginning of the program, there was a guy running through the woods being hunted by a bear. The first thought that came to mind was the fate of the late Timothy Treadwell. He was a former actor who spent 13 summers living among, and making friends with grizzly bears in Katmai National Park in Alaska.

Yup… They ate him.

Director Werner Herzog made a film pieced together from Treadwells footage shot during those summers. It’s called Grizzly Man. I bring it up because, although the film never showed any footage of the bear attack, based not only on reports from friends, family, and the doctors, but also on Treadwells footage, and the realism contained in the picture, you REALLY gain a sense of that ‘primal fear’ of being eaten alive, even if Treadwell did not.

I do recommend THAT film.

The segment of Primal Fear about being eaten alive featured the shark attacks off the coast of New Jersey in 1916 that inspired Peter Benchleys novel, “Jaws”. In case you’ve been living on another planet, it was made into a movie which kept EVERYONE out of the water due to the fear of being eaten alive.

It continued to talk about alligators, and mountain lions eating people. It was interesting, but after a little while, it felt like I was watching an Animal Planet show about mountain lions. I was looking forward to the next segment.

Snakes
Due to the uncanny stupidity of certain people, I REALLY found this segment to be the most entertaining. With that in mind, they kinda lost me on this one. I’m just not afraid of snakes.

Growing up, there were 3 things that fascinated me. One, I loved ghosts, and spooky stuff. The second was sharks. I probably know just as much about sharks as I do about the paranormal. Lastly, snakes. I LOVED snakes. Growing up, I was always catching a snake, and trying to keep it as a pet. I’ve had parents of the neighborhood kids sneak into my yard in the middle of the night to release the snakes that I had caught because they were afraid that their kids would get attacked. Stupids.

I’m not afraid of them. With that in mind, I’m not stupid either. You wouldn’t catch me grabbing rattlesnakes, throwing them around, and playing with them for shits and giggles.

Naturally, the show starts by talking about the use of snakes and serpents in the teachings of many religions in the world as a possibility for being one of the bases for this fear in a lot of us.

The program went on to discuss George Hensley, and his founding of the “Church of God with Signs Following”. You know? The snake handlers? They grab rattlesnakes, throw them around, and play with them while speaking in tongues. They don’t do this for shits and giggles, though. They do it to show that they are more powerful than demons.

The founder of the church, George Hensley got bit by a snake, and died. Although illegal in many states, apparently this practice is still going strong, and has taken out over 60 religious zealots since 1910.

That brings me to the next group of people lining up for their Darwin Awards. In Freer, Texas, they have this thing called the “Rattlesnake Roundup”. People from all over catch some rattlesnakes, and bring them to Freer to sell to the snake handlers or to… Ya know… Have some fun grabbing rattlesnakes, throwing them around, and playing with them for shits and giggles.

They actually let tourists into the snake pit to to play with the rattlesnakes. In the show there was a snake handler teaching the tourists how to handle the snakes safely. The end of one of his thumbs was nothing more than a pointy bone due to a rattlesnake bite. This is DEFINITELY the guy I want teaching me, and watching MY back.

Buried AliveHave fun storming the castle!
What can I say about being buried alive? In the show they went into how back in the day, they didn’t have all the technology that they have today to make sure that people aren’t dead. So they just buried the living. It’s as simple as that. During time of the plague, comas, and deep sleeps were sometimes mistaken for death. Back then, this happened all the time.

I’ll tell ya what they needed. They needed Miracle Max to revive the ‘mostly dead’, and rescue people from this fate. But no.

Hell
Hell would suck. I don’t think that there’s much to comment on here. The program talked about all the religions of the world, and their often eternal punishment for wrongdoing. Dante, and his Inferno was also discussed. They didn’t mention Randall though.

Monsters
I found this one VERY interesting from a scientific standpoint. I liked how they described why we were afraid of monsters when we were children. At young ages, our brains are still developing. At about the age of 3 or 4, our minds understand the human form. We understand what is normal, and what is not. ANY deviation from that ‘normal’ that we’re used to, frightens us. Again, I really don’t want to give too much away, but I liked this one.

For the record. I still close the closet door before sleepytime, and I HATE clowns.

Drowning & Burned Alive
These were the next two fears. Honestly, I wasn’t glued to the television watching these. Don’t get me wrong, They WERE worth watching, but there was nothing spectacular that I feel warrants a discussion.

Terrorism
They talked about a few terrorist type situations, but they mostly focused on only ONE day, September 11th.

Frankly I’m still VERY upset about that day. That wound hasn’t even come close to healing for me as it seemingly has for so many other people. Because of that, I don’t watch the movies about it, and I don’t want it shoved in my face when I turn on the TV. Primal Fear spent ENTIRELY too much time on this topic, and showing us why we fear the terrorism. I couldn’t help but wonder… If the terrorists were able to get cable over there in those caves, and if they watched this segment, would they be laughing?

That was next to the last segment of the show. And unfortunately, it left me with a bitter taste in my mouthRound and Round! With love we'll find a way. Just give it time! for the next segment.

Rats
Rats are creepy. They used to carry the plague. Lotsa people died. They rocked in the 80’s. Well… I thought they did. Actually, I STILL listen to their stuff. Shut up.

I nitpick at everything, so I DO have my complaints, but all in all, I thought this was an interesting program, and well worth the watch. My only complaints were the use of 911, the lack of paranormal-ness, and maybe the list of fears themselves.

It seems to me that if they were going to list a bunch of fears that are widely felt by a lot of people, they could have been a little more in touch with what people are REALLY afraid of. Don’t get me wrong. This is a good list, but there are SOME fears, that I think are a LOT more widespread than things like rats, snakes, monsters, or even Hell. How bout spiders? Almost everyone I know is afraid of spiders. Talking to women? There are a lot of dudes that can’t even go up and say, ‘Hello’ because of an intense, and immobilizing fear. I used to feel that, so I know it’s a LOT worse than being afraid of rats. What about…

Yeah. What about…

What are YOU afraid of?

Here’s the contest. If you want to win a free copy of Primal Fear on DVD, leave a comment to this article. You’re welcome to tell me your opinion on what I wrote here, but what I REALLY want is for you to answer that simple question.

In your comment, please include:

  • Lastly, answer the frickin’ question. What are you afraid of? I mean REALLY. Go deep. Why do you fear this? How does it make you feel? What if it happened?

The best answer will get the DVD.

The contest ends on February 20th 2009. Stay tuned for the Monster Quest Season 2 DVD contest.

The Beyond Is Giving Away DVD’s!

~Written By Bill Stone~

This month A&E Home video is releasing 3 paranormal related television programs on DVD. Last week I had received an email from A&E Home Video telling me about this. They want to promote it, and asked me to help out by reviewing them for the site, and giving away a few DVDs.

The releases include:

Primal Fear: From what I’ve been told, this is a History Channel documentary about the history, psychology, and science of our fears. What causes it? Chemicals in the brain.. All that stuff.
I haven’t seen the show YET, but it SOUNDS pretty interesting.

Monster Quest Season 2:
This is another History Channel show about cryptozoology, and legendary monsters like Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness Monster. Haven’t watched Season 2 yet, but I really enjoyed the first season. It was a nice change of pace from Ghost Hunters on Wednesday nights.

Paranormal State Season 2: This is an A&E show. It’s about some ghost hunters doin’ some stuff. I can’t give you much of a description because I only watched the first 4 or 5 episodes to try to give it a chance, and flat out hated it. I can tell you that I thought it was melodramatic, and that it showcased what I would personally consider some of the biggest problems that the scientific paranormal community faces today. Someday, I’ll watch it again, and give it a more thorough review for the site.

Not today.

Instead, IntoTheBeyond.Net is giving away Primal Fear, and the Second Season of Monster Quest On DVD!

Here’s how It’s gonna work… After I get done watching these DVDs, (Probably within the next week or so for the first one, and another week for the second) I’m going to write an article right here on our Articles & Editorials section of the site about each show. At the end of each article, there will be a question.

Answer the question by commenting on the article. The best answer wins the DVD that goes with that particular article.

Easy enough?

I hope you’re interested in getting involved in these contests.  This is the first time we’ve tried to do something like this. I mean… Free shit… Right? Also, if ya feel like it, do me a favor, if you plan on trying to win the DVD’s,  leave a comment here so I can guage the interest. If things work out, maybe we’ll do something like this again.

Bill :)
